MOORING SYSTEM INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT THROUGH MONITORING TECHNOLOGIES, DIGITAL TWIN AND CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES TO REDUCE COSTS AND INCREASE EFFICIENCY

The MooringSense project aims to reduce operational costs and increase efficiency through the development of an effective risk-based mooring system integrity management strategy, supported by affordable and reliable online monitoring technology. The proposed solution will be enabled by the development of a low-cost smart sensor for monitoring FOWT motion, a Digital Twin model of the mooring system, structural health monitoring techniques, as well as control strategies for fault-tolerant mooring condition management at both turbine and wind farm level.
The proposed monitoring technology will replace current monitoring systems, which are unreliable and expensive and are based on load cells installed on mooring lines, with a combination of a robust motion sensor and numerical models. In addition, the measurements obtained will enable the development of more efficient operation and maintenance strategies, including optimized control.
The strength of the MooringSense consortium covers the entire value chain, with a proven track record in the offshore wind and oil and gas industries and the support of experienced research institutions. The project will build on the partners’ existing technologies to develop an innovative and cost-effective mooring integrity management solution enabled by Global Navigation Satellite System technology, coupled numerical modelling, control engineering and machine learning. This will result in greater overall system efficiency and reduced operating expenditure compared with known traditional alternatives.
